André Onana will not leave Ajax this transfer period. In any case, the keeper will remain in Amsterdam until the winter, his agent tells the NOS. In the search for a new club, Onana sets the bar very high for herself and therefore no more action is expected on the final day of the transfer market, it sounds like.

Marc Overmars expressed the expectation last Sunday that Onana would be sold during this transfer period. “It is best for both parties, yes,” the director of football affairs said in conversation with ESPN. After that, Overmars did not want to answer the question whether he thinks that Onana, who does not want to extend his contract until mid-2022, has behaved well in the past period. “That’s a great question and I’d rather answer it in a week. We’ve got it in mind how we’re going to do it.”

Onana is currently serving a suspension after traces of banned substances were found in his body during a doping test. Ajax and the keeper successfully appealed against the one-year suspension. Onana can join Ajax’s group training again next Saturday. On November 6, he could make his comeback in the home game against Go Ahead Eagles.

Earlier this transfer window, Onana was close to a transfer to Olympique Lyon. A deal would eventually have been rejected. General director Edwin van der Sar said earlier this month that Onana is intended to leave. “That is also his approach. With Maarten (Stekelenburg) and Remko (Pasveer) we have two very good keepers. Maarten has done extremely well and has even played with the Dutch national team at the European Championships. That has been a huge bonus for him. Now he has to show it again at the club,” said Van der Sar against Ziggo Sports.
