Go Ahead Eagles put an end to the bad series against SC Cambuur on Saturday. The team of trainer Kees van Wonderen was 3-0 too strong for the Frisians in a full Adelaarshorst, who had won each of the four previous Eredivisie matches with the club from Deventer. The standard situations have been a sore point for Cambuur all season, as it turned out on Saturday. The Frisians have faced a total of sixteen from standard situations this Eredivisie season, at least three more than any other team.
Go Ahead went to the dressing rooms with a good feeling after the halftime signal sounded. Van Wonderen’s team knew where to catch Cambuur this season and struck twice from a standard situation. Until the 1-0 in minute 25, the home side tried to control the game and put pressure on the Cambuur defence, but that didn’t produce any real great opportunities initially. An unfortunate moment on the Frisian side led to the opening goal and the start of a beautiful evening.
Joris Kramer extended a corner towards the post at the long corner. On the way, however, the ball collided with Mees Hoedemakers’ chest, so that the ball ended up in the net: 1-0. Cambuur then couldn’t get a grip on Go Ahead, which continuously created danger, especially via Cuco Martina and Philippe Rommens on the right. The 2-0 fell nine minutes before the break: Luuk Brouwers nodded right from a free kick by Bas Kuipers.
Brouwers had his ninth of the season on his shoe five minutes after the break, but goalkeeper Pieter Bos cleverly turned the bet with his leg. The number of highlights in the second half could eventually be counted on one hand. Van Wonderen’s team seemed to be satisfied with the double lead, but in minute 78 the 3-0 fell after all. Mats Deijl chased the Frisian defence, cleared himself for Bos and finished cool-bloodedly.
Go Ahead seems to be facing a carefree end of the competition due to the victory. The PhD student is now on thirty points and thus keeps six teams under him. The relegation zone is therefore at a safe distance. Cambuur in turn has to fear for the place in the left row.
