Ajax is negotiating with André Onana about how both parties intend to continue with each other. The goalkeeper, who is currently on a 12-month doping suspension, still has an ongoing contract in Amsterdam until the summer of 2022. Trainer Erik ten Hag announced during the press conference on Wednesday afternoon in the run-up to the Europa League match with Lille OSC that the club will all options, now that the closing item has been excluded from training and competitions for a year.

The situation around Onana requires due care, Ten Hag notes. “We are in discussion with him about his contract situation and a plan is included about how we will proceed. How we bridge this ”, said the trainer. “It depends on what the Arbitration and Sports Court (CAS) decides. All options are reviewed and we will develop a plan on how to implement the collaboration. Obviously we cannot say anything about the content of the plan. ”

Reporter Mike Verweij from The Telegraph previously announced that Ajax will use Onana’s contract expiring in mid-2022 in its attempt to enforce a reduced sentence at the CAS. On the other hand, Onana could be forced by Ajax to pay compensation, Verweij thinks. Previously, Adrian Mutu had to pay no less than seventeen million euros to Chelsea after fourteen years of litigation for doping use.

Onana was suspended by UEFA in early January for violating doping rules. The goalkeeper took the banned substance furosemide. He himself says he accidentally took the drug when he wanted to take an aspirin, but instead took his wife’s medicine Lasimac. In the meantime Ajax is doing everything in its power to bring back the suspension of twelve months. Club and player expect the sports tribunal CAS to rule on the case within a few months.
