Besiktas continues to be in a form crisis. Sergen Yalçin’s troubled team lost 2-0 to Alanyaspor on Saturday and that meant the next, figurative, slap in the face to the reigning champions of Turkey. It is the sixth defeat for Besiktas in the last eight official duels since the 2-0 defeat against Ajax, which it was already assumed that the Turks have only sunk deeper into the swamp since then. Wednesday is the reunion in Istanbul.
The opening goal fell after fourteen minutes of play. Efecan Karaca passed the ball from the edge of the penalty area towards the goal mouth, where Khouma Babacar was lost out of sight by Valentin Rosier and Welinton. The attacker worked the ball with a volley behind goalkeeper Ersin Destanoglu: 1-0.
Besiktas had no answer for that in the remaining five quarters of an hour. Deep into extra time, minutes after Leroy Fer had replaced Karaca, Alanyaspor made it 2-0. Substitute Famara Diédhiou easily got rid of Welinton and let Domagoj Vida see his heels, after which he passed Destanoglu and pushed the ball diagonally into the goal.
Besiktas have lost four of their last five league matches; points were only taken in the city derby against Galatasaray (2-1). Yalcin’s team has lost all group matches in the Champions League so far and has one of the most passed defenses of all participants with 12 goals against. Only RB Leipzig has so far conceded more goals: thirteen to twelve.
