Ajax achieved an important victory in the battle for fifth place on a visit to FC Volendam on Sunday afternoon. The team from Amsterdam were too strong for Regillio Simons' team with a score of 1-4. Kenneth Taylor (twice), Chuba Akpom and Brian Brobbey scored the goals for Ajax. Benaissa Benamar scored on behalf of Volendam. Due to the loss, Volendam has now been officially relegated from the Eredivisie.
Ajax got away well in the first ten minutes of the match. Gerónimo Rulli committed a foul in the penalty area, but fortunately for him, he was found offside earlier in the attack, so the ball ultimately did not hit the spot.
After two big chances from Brobbey, Taylor finally managed to open the score. Akpom laid it on the edge of the sixteen for Taylor, who cleverly placed the ball in the cross: 0-1.
After 35 minutes, Volendam had a great chance to equalize. Zach Booth passed the ball from the side, into which Vivaldo Semedo was able to head freely. However, his sights were not focused and the ball disappeared over the goal.
Soon in the second half it seemed to be 1-1. A long ball from the back was not intercepted by Josip Sutalo, after which Darius Johnson lobbed the ball face to face with Rulli on the post.
Despite the difficult start in the second half, Ajax took a 0-2 lead after 58 minutes of play. Mika Godts pushed well on the side, after which his cross fell at the feet of Akpom via Mio Backhaus. The Englishman tapped in to make his eleventh of the season.
Twenty minutes before the end, Brobbey also scored his goal. The striker took the ball from Damon Mirani, who was left with a lot. He then cut to his left leg and lashed into the far corner: 0-3.
Jordan Henderson also showed his class. The Englishman passed the ball deep to Taylor, who then lashed into the short corner with his left foot and made it 0-4.
That also turned out not to be the final score in Volendam. Benamar headed in the 1-4 on a pass from Booth, after questionable defending from Sutalo.
Due to the loss against Ajax, Volendam has now been officially relegated. The club can no longer overtake Excelsior, which is sixteenth, and can prepare for the Kitchen Champion Division.
