The match in the eighth final in the Champions League between Benfica and Ajax is sold out, the Amsterdam club announced on Tuesday. On February 23, 3250 Ajax supporters are expected to fill the branch in the Estádio da Luz. The last 395 tickets were sold on Tuesday. The Benfica stadium in Lisbon can accommodate more than 65,000 visitors. The return match in the Johan Cruijff ArenA follows three weeks later on 15 March.

Ajax emphasizes on Tuesday in the coverage surrounding the away match against Benfica that fans who want to travel to Portugal soon must be able to submit digital international corona proof via the corona check app. Only in this way is access to Benfica’s accommodation possible. Due to the corona pandemic, it was still unclear at the beginning of this season whether away fans were welcome at the Champions League matches outside Amsterdam. UEFA gave the green light at the beginning of September for taking supporters to the away games against Sporting Lisbon (1-5), Borussia Dortmund (1-3) and Besiktas (1-2).

It is good for the supporters of Ajax, as the recesses in the Eredivisie have been empty for some time. This season, the stadiums in the Netherlands even remained completely empty for some time. Football fans are now welcome again to a limited extent in the Eredivisie and Kitchen Champion Division. Ajax is still competing for the prizes on all fronts. Benfica must be defeated for a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, while Vitesse is the opponent in the quarterfinals of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday evening. In addition, as a leader, they have built up a five-point lead over number two PSV.

Ajax will therefore receive a visit from Benfica on March 15 in the eighth final of the Champions League. It is currently unclear how many visitors can attend that game in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. In the Eredivisie, the Dutch government is sticking to an occupancy rate of a maximum of one third for all stadiums, but it is expected that further relaxation will be implemented at a press conference next week. Perhaps UEFA, the organizer of the Champions League, will also make announcements regarding the occupation of the stadiums for the remainder of this season.
