Latest update:

Ajax considered bringing back Nicolás Tagliafico during the past winter transfer period, it is reported Het Parool Friday morning. The Amsterdam team even asked his employer Olympique Lyon about the defender, but a transfer did not get off the ground.

John van 't Schip spoke out about possible reinforcements for Ajax towards the end of the transfer window. The trainer had one clear wish: an experienced player in the backline. “If we really want to take a step, it is necessary,” Van 't Schip said at the time.

Ajax had Tagliafico in mind for that role and so the current number five in the Eredivisie reported to France. “But his current club did not want to let him go for the offer that Ajax had in mind,” he wrote Het Parool.

A transfer from Tagliafico to the Johan Cruijff ArenA was probably financially difficult to realize. The Amsterdam team currently has to spare every dime, while the left back in Lyon reportedly earns a generous salary by Ajax standards.

Tagliafico previously played 4.5 seasons for the record champions of the Netherlands. Between 2018 and 2022, the Argentinian made 169 appearances for Ajax, scoring 16 goals and providing 23 assists.

During that period, Tagliafico became a crowd favorite among Amsterdam supporters, many of whom hoped for the wing defender's return to Ajax. During his time in the Netherlands, Tagliafico won three national titles and two TOTO KNVB Cups.

Ultimately, the now 55-time Argentina international left Ajax behind in the summer of 2022. Tagliafico moved to Olympique Lyon for more than four million euros, for which the defender has now played 55 games.
