Ajax failed to beat PEC Zwolle on Sunday. Lennart Thy plunged the Amsterdam team into deep mourning in the final phase of the match with an overhead kick: 2-2. The PEC striker received the ball through the hand of teammate Apostolos Vellios, but VAR Sander van der Eijk failed to disallow the goal.

Ajax started without Steven Bergwijn (groin injury) and Kristian Hlynsson. The latter was given a rest, but came on during the break. Chuba Apkom started at 10 behind Brian Brobbey, who, like Devyne Rensch, was fit enough to start. At PEC there was one change compared to the match against RKC Waalwijk (1-0 loss): Zico Buurmeester replaced the injured Ryan Thomas.

The first dangerous moment came after fifteen minutes for Ajax. Brian Brobbey received the ball with some luck and was free for Jasper Schendelaar. The PEC goalkeeper reduced the angle and got the ball straight to him.

Then PEC Zwolle took control. The visitors created three huge chances in the space of a few minutes, but failed to convert any of them into a goal. Davy van den Berg was released for Diant Ramaj by Younes Namli, but the midfielder needed too much time.

Then Bram van Polen hit the ball badly with complete freedom, allowing Jorrel Hato to head away on the goal line. Van den Berg was then released for Ramaj, but this time the PEC midfielder shot wide.

Almost out of nowhere, Ajax made it 1-0 in the 37th minute. Rensch played wide from the penalty area to Brobbey, who was able to run the ball in. The flag was flagged for offside, but the VAR declared a valid goal. Akpom saw a headed goal disallowed for offside in the final phase of the first half.

Ajax started excellently after the break and made it 2-0 through Brobbey again in the 48th minute. The striker received the ball with a stroke of luck from Benjamin Tahirovic and shot home.

In the 55th minute, Ajax supporters stood en masse in tribute to Van 't Schip. The trainer lost his wife Daniëlle on October 10 at the age of 55.

Ajax's game did not improve in the meantime. PEC made the match exciting again after exactly an hour. Lennart Thy shot in through half a block from Hato, who unluckily lifted the ball over goalkeeper Ramaj: 2-1.

Twelve minutes before the end, Berghuis seemed to tap into an empty goal, but Ajax's right winger botched his shot. Fortunately for the captain, Taylor was whistled back for offside in the same attack. A Berghuis goal could have still counted via VAR, because Taylor appeared to have received the ball from a PEC player.

In the 89th minute, PEC leveled. Vellios managed to tap the ball to Thy in the penalty area, who scored nicely with a bicycle kick: 2-2. The replay showed that Vellios briefly touched his hand, but the goal counted.
