Ajax responds to De Klassieker’s strike with a statement. On Sunday afternoon, the match between the Amsterdam team and Feyenoord was stopped after fireworks were thrown on the field for the second time in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The club reports through official channels that it is distancing itself from the misconduct.

“The management and the Supervisory Board of Ajax distance themselves from the misconduct that led to the abandonment of the match against Feyenoord on Sunday and the disturbances afterwards,” the club channels said. “This is not the behavior that belongs to Ajax.” With a 0-3 score, De Klassieker was stopped, as the parties involved no longer had confidence that the match would come to a successful conclusion without new incidents.

“Disappointment about the poor start to the season is completely understandable, but should never be the reason for disturbances,” Ajax continues the statement. “We apologize to anyone who has felt unsafe or has been affected by this in any other way.”

The club has not yet made any statements about when the remainder of the match will take place. The earliest possible catch-up date appears to be November 1. For that period, the football agenda seems too full to schedule De Klassieker due to European football and the international match, among other things. The last 35 minutes of the match will probably be played in an empty Johan Cruijff ArenA.
