Richard Witschge is missing from Ajax’s training field for the time being. The team from Amsterdam communicate through official channels that the former midfielder has suffered an Achilles tendon injury. The duties of Witschge, who is part of Ajax’s technical staff as a technique and assistant trainer, are provisionally taken over by Gerald Vanenburg.

The 56-year-old Vanenburg, who as a player wore the shirt of Ajax, PSV and the Dutch national team, returned to Amsterdam last summer, to support the Under-17 and Under-18 as a technical trainer. The 42-time Oranje-international, who has the European Championship of 1988 to his palmares, previously worked at PSV (youth coach), 1860 Munich, Helmond Sport, FC Eindhoven (all as head coach) and Willem II (field trainer), before joining rejoined Ajax.

“Ajax has a fantastic youth and I have a good feeling about the club. Ajax was the dream club of young football players and a big name. The club had and still has great appeal ”, said Vanenburg when he appeared on the Ajax website. “The advantage of Ajax is that they can get the top talents. I am now a technique trainer for the Under-17 and Under-18 and we can work in great detail due to the high level. Because in a match but also in training, every ball has to be good. That can save the club twenty to thirty million in the Champions League. ”

Vanenburg is now temporarily transferred to the first team, where he takes over the tasks of Witschge. The former midfielder of Ajax and Barcelona, among others, has suffered an Achilles tendon injury and it is unclear how long he will not be able to perform his function as technique and assistant trainer. Witschge has been part of Ajax’s technical staff in this position since 2012, previously under Frank de Boer, Peter Bosz and Marcel Keizer.
