Jay Gorter makes the definitive switch from Go Ahead Eagles to Ajax, the Amsterdam club has confirmed through the official channels. The goalie thus returns via a detour to the club for which he also played in youth between 2010 and 2014. Gorter, who was named best goalkeeper of the Kitchen Champion Division over the past season, signs a four-year contract in Amsterdam.

Last season, Gorter was one of the most important pawns in the newly promoted Go Ahead, where he broke Tonnie van Leeuwen’s fifty-year-old record in April by keeping no fewer than 24 times in the Kitchen Champion Division. Eventually the counter stopped at 25 clean sheets. Gorter ended up at Go Ahead in 2018 via amateur club AFC and then AZ. The keeper has hinted several times in recent weeks that he would like to return to the club where he played in the youth academy for four years.

Weeks of negotiations preceded the agreement between Ajax and Go Ahead. Director of football affairs Marc Overmars of Ajax withdrew according to The Telegraph back earlier because of the ‘laughable’ asking price: Go Ahead would ask Ajax 2.5 million euros, while Vitesse Gorter could bring in 750,000 euros. It General Newspaper then reported that Ajax had again reported to the Deventer club for Gorter with an increased offer.

At Ajax, many changes will take place within the goalkeeper file this summer. The Amsterdammers want to sell the suspended André Onana and are also open to a departure from Kjell Scherpen, who seems to be on his way to Brighton & Hove Albion for an amount of five million euros. It is certain that Ajax will continue with Maarten Stekelenburg and that he will have to compete with Remko Pasveer from Vitesse who came over from Vitesse. Gorter must become the first goalkeeper of Young Ajax. Onana is in the interest of Arsenal.
