Latest update:

Manchester United are close to ridding themselves of Mason Greenwood. The controversial forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, is on the verge of completing a transfer to Olympique Marseille, David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano reported on Tuesday. Greenwood has reached an agreement in principle with Marseille on a summer deal.

The 22-year-old striker will travel to Marseille shortly for a medical and all the formalities surrounding his five-year contract in the South of France. Greenwood has been enjoying a holiday in recent weeks and returned to Manchester United's complex on Monday to finalise his departure from the club.

Transfer was in the air

The deal between Manchester United and the French has been in the works for some time. In June, Marseille's interest in Greenwood was first reported and now a deal is as good as done.

Erik ten Hag's employer receives a generous amount of thirty million euros in advance for Greenwood. With a resale percentage of between forty and fifty percent, that sum can still increase considerably.

Manchester United will therefore make a handsome sum from the sale of Greenwood, who had no future at Old Trafford due to the alleged assault and rape of his girlfriend Harriet Robson. Robson has since withdrawn all charges against Greenwood and she is even back together with him.

According to Transfer market the 22-year-old winger and centre forward represents a market value of 25 million euros. Certainly considering his contract runs until the summer of 2025, the fee paid for him is therefore not on the low side.

Greenwood scored 10 goals in 36 matches for Getafe last season on loan. Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli considered signing Greenwood from Manchester United, who are now doing business with Marseille.

At Marseille, Greenwood will have to deal with Roberto De Zerbi as head coach. The Italian, who is praised for his playing style, left despite a current contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. The expectation was that he could sign for a top club, but nothing could be further from the truth when De Zerbi went to sea with Marseille.
