Three stewards were assaulted in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Thursday evening, among other things The Telegraph and Het Parool to report. During the Europa League match between Ajax and AEK Athens (3-1), Greek fans shined laser pointers, who were then confronted by the stewards involved. The security staff were then assaulted by AEK fans.

According to reports, there was a disturbance in the Johan Cruijff ArenA around 9:30 PM, half an hour after kick-off. Greek supporters used laser pointers, after which the stewards intervened. Three staff members were assaulted and injured.

A suspect was arrested immediately after the match, while the Amsterdam police 'do not rule out' multiple arrests. The arrested Greek is still in custody on Friday. It is currently unclear what the consequences will be for the perpetrator.

The staff reacted with shock to the incident, an ArenA spokeswoman said in conversation with Het Parool. “We strongly disapprove of any form of violence against people or our building. A report has been filed.”

The Amsterdam police report that the assault was not the only incident in the stadium. “Two Greek supporters were also arrested for public drunkenness. The police are investigating the case and more arrests cannot be ruled out.”

In addition, a supporter was arrested on a terrace in the city center of Amsterdam carrying a drum with a sticker on it that read ACAB (All Cops Are Bastards). After paying a fine, the man got his drum back, without a sticker.

Not only Greek supporters came into contact with the police, because Ajax fans also misbehaved. Before the match, Weesperplein metro station was evacuated after vandalism by Ajax fans. 147 people were arrested for vandalizing three metros.
