Borussia Dortmund won against Chelsea on Wednesday evening with minimal figures: 1-0. A great solo from Karim Adeyemi, who rewarded the individual action with a goal, made the difference in the Signal Iduna Park after the break. Sébastien Haller participated in Dortmund for about seventy minutes, Hakim Ziyech completed the ninety minutes for the losing Chelsea. The return in London is on March 7.

Haller played in the Champions League for the first time since his departure from Ajax and the diagnosis of testicular cancer. The attack leader was supported in the back by Julian Brandt, Jude Bellingham and the therefore accurate Adeyemi, among others. Donyell Malen was once again on the bench with the German Champions League participant, just like Marco Reus. On the side of Chelsea there was again a starting place for Hakim Ziyech. Enzo Fernández, the acquisition of 120 million euros, João Félix and Mykhaylo Mudryk also appeared at the kick-off in Dortmund.

Thiago Silva thought he had scored from a corner after more than fifteen minutes of play, but he did so by hand. The result was a disallowed goal and a yellow card. After almost twenty minutes of play, and with both teams reasonably balanced, Dortmund issued the first warning. Bellingham managed to find the Marius Wolf who had come along, but the right back shot wide in a promising position. Haller really asserted himself for the first time after almost half an hour of play. However, the striker’s close range shot went into the side netting. Then it was Chelsea’s turn, with two great chances for João Félix. The Portuguese shot over on a pass from Ziyech and hit the crossbar for a few minutes. Just before the half-time signal, the busy Wolf shot wide again. So no goals halfway in Dortmund.

Ten minutes after the break, Gregor Kobel showed himself to be very important for Dortmund by plucking a free kick from Reece James from the right corner. The same James saw a bet in the box fly over the goal, after good preparatory work from Mudryk. Chelsea insisted, but got the lid on the nose. Thiago Silva was unable to score from a corner kick, after which Raphaël Guerreiro managed to reach Adeyemi. The wing attacker started a solo in his own half, sprinted out Fernandez, among others, and then also outwitted Kepa: 1-0. A hurricane of sound erupted in Dortmund, which did not give away the lead afterwards.

The tired Haller was taken off after almost seventy minutes, with Anthony Modeste as his replacement. Shortly afterwards, Ziyech was booked for a throw-away gesture after a foul in Dortmund’s box. Emre Can turned out to be Dortmund’s hero twelve minutes before time by getting the ball off the line just in time. The interception was necessary after Kobel unleashed a hard blast from Kalidou Koulibaly. Chelsea pressed on until the last moment, but a bet by Ziyech, among others, was blocked in time by the alert Dortmund defense, while Kobel felinely parried a curled shot by Fernández. The home club survived the five minutes of injury time and will travel to England in three weeks with good papers.
