AC Milan took a big hit in the Italian title fight on Sunday evening. The team of trainer Stefano Pioli won 0-1 against Napoli and is therefore in the lead with 60 points; number two Internazionale has 58 points and a match credit, while Napoli is in third place with 57 points. The winning goal was scored at the start of the second half by Olivier Giroud.
In the first half, the teams competed for every ball, but the game mainly took place in the midfield. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested; the only shot on goal was produced by Rafael Leao, but his roller was no problem for keeper David Ospina. In the third minute, defender Amir Rrahmani fired over from Napoli with a shot from the penalty area following a corner for the home side. Ospina reacted with a powerful reflex to a header from Junior Messias, but due to a Milan foul, the bet didn’t go down as an attempt on goal.

A few minutes after the break, Giroud broke the spell. After Sandro Tonali brought the ball into the penalty area from a free kick, Napoli couldn’t get the ball away. At the edge of the box, the ball landed at the feet of Davide Calabria, whose shot missed the right direction. This gave Giroud the opportunity to get an outstretched foot against the ball, leaving goalkeeper Ospina without a chance: 0-1. Napoli hoped to come alongside quickly via a shot from Victor Osimhen, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan made the save. On the other side, Ospina prevented Ismaël Bennacer’s 0-2.
Milan’s organization was in good order, limiting the number of chances for Napoli to equalize. However, the home team increased the pressure and was close to a goal five minutes before the end of regular time: the broken through Osimhen encountered Maignan from a difficult angle. Milan immediately started the counterattack and saw Ospina save on a shot by Theo Hernández. In stoppage time Alexis Saelemaekers shot eye to eye with Ospina over the goal, but that miss did not dampen Milan’s joy in any way.
