There is a risk of a problem arising next season regarding the broadcasting rights of European club competitions, according to Chris Woerts Today Inside. Ziggo Sport has purchased the rights to the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League with effect from mid-2024, but not everyone can receive this.

The intention is that the matches of the Dutch clubs can be viewed for free by everyone in the Netherlands via the Ziggo GO app. Ziggo customers have the additional advantage that they can also watch all important matches on channel 14 on their TV set.

However, according to Woerts, this leads to problems. “Ziggo will have the rights to the major European club competitions next season,” said the sports marketer. “For this they must have 75 percent coverage in the Netherlands. But 40 percent of Dutch people do not have a television on which they can download an app.”

“40 percent of Dutch people will soon not be able to watch Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV or AZ,” Woerts continues. “These are people who have an old television. That is a problem. Ziggo should arrange that, but they say that people have to download the app.”

Woerts calls on Geert Wilders. “This seems to me to be an excellent task for Geert, who says he will stand up for all of us, to ensure that the whole of the Netherlands can continue to watch the open network.”

“We have so many problems in this country and you are going to call on Geert Wilders to show people Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV?” Wilfred Genee is astonished. “Sport is the dynamic in society. The connecting factor,” Woerts concludes with a quip.
