Girondins Bordeaux ceases to exist. The six-time French champion has decided to file for bankruptcy due to persistent major financial problems. The club has informed the football association that its professional license will not be renewed. Bordeaux is struggling with a debt of more than 40 million euros.

Bordeaux has traditionally been a major club in France, but in recent years the club has continued to drop down the rankings. In the 2021/22 season, Bordeaux was already relegated from Ligue 1. At that time, there were already huge financial problems. The last two years, the club played in Ligue 2. Last season, Bordeaux finished twelfth there.

Due to the problems, Bordeaux were recently demoted by the French Football Federation to the National 1, the third tier. The club initially appealed the decision, hoping that the problems could be resolved with a new owner. However, negotiations with Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's owners, broke down.

The filing for bankruptcy will terminate all player contracts at Bordeaux. The club's training complex will be closed.

Bordeaux won the French Cup six times in total (most recently in 2009) and the French Cup four times. In the 1980s, the club often participated in major international tournaments.

From the 1992/93 season, Zinédine Zidane, probably the club's most famous former player, was under contract with Bordeaux for four years. With former internationals such as Wim Kieft, Richard Witschge and Stanley Menzo, the club also had Dutch connections in the past.
