RC Lens has booked an extremely crucial victory in Ligue 1. Partly thanks to a goal by Loïs Openda, the ‘Champions League duel’ with Olympique Marseille was won 2-1. Thanks to the victory, the team of coach Franck Haise takes over second place from Olympique Marseille, which drops to third place. The top two teams qualify directly for the group stage of the Champions League until this season. The number three, now Marseille, will have to try through the preliminary rounds.
Particularities
It was Marseille that seemed to take the lead in the opening phase. Alexis Sánchez scored, but the goal was disallowed for a foul leading up to that goal. After chances for Seko Fofana on the one hand and Jonathan Clauss on the other, it was still a hit just before the break. Kevin Danso more or less accidentally brought the ball to Fofana, who saw his powder come in wonderfully from about twenty meters: 1-0.
After an hour, Openda doubled the margin for the home team. Przemyslaw Frankowski put the ball ready to go at the far post, where Openda had the ball for the inside: 2-0. Just in time, Dimitri Payet made it 2-1 in a nice way, by skillfully shaking off a defender and then rounding it off. However, that was it, making Lens the club with the best credentials for direct Champions League qualification.
