The Dutch national team receives support from seven other countries for the OneLove campaign during the world championship in Qatar. Dutch football started the campaign in 2020 and Virgil van Dijk was already supposed to play with a rainbow captain’s armband at the final tournament this winter. Now Belgium, Denmark, Germany, England, France, Wales and Switzerland are also joining them.

All captains from the above countries will also sport a rainbow captain’s armband, making a statement towards Qatar, where women’s rights and the LGBTI community are under pressure. Van Dijk is happy with the support of the seven countries. “It is an important message that fits with football: everyone is equal on the field and that should be the case everywhere. Norway and Sweden are also participating in the OneLove campaign. The two countries failed to qualify for the World Cup, but will play with the rainbow captaincy during the Nations League matches of this international period.
