A surrender clause in Ousmane Dembele’s new contract with Barcelona last July could net him millions. The agreement, which will keep him at the club until the end of June 2024, includes a €50 million surrender clause, reports said L’Equipe. Should a club pay this sum, half will go to Dembélé and his representatives.

The contract extension was a veritable soap opera that gripped the entire Catalan press from January to July this year. Finally, on 14 July, the French national holiday, he signed his new contract with Barça. During the negotiations, the attacker and his entourage emphasized that they want to stay with the Catalan club. Due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, a departure remained an option.

However, at the beginning of last summer, both parties agreed on a new contract. Dembélé received a salary increase, where other players had to make a wage sacrifice. Some sacrifices were also expected from the attacker and his entourage. Dembélé had to waive a signing bonus and his representatives were not paid any commissions. On the other hand, Dembélé did demand a surrender clause of fifty million euros and thus received it.

If there is a club that wants to take over the Frenchman after this season, no less than fifty percent of the amount will go to Dembélé and his representatives. This allowed Barcelona to meet Dembélé’s demands, without making its own fragile finances even more fragile. The new surrender sum is in stark contrast to the earlier surrender clause in his contract of no less than 400 million euros. In 2017, the Frenchman was taken over from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of 105 million euros, which could amount to 140 million euros including bonuses.
