Feyenoord – AZ is a match full of cross connections. The current Feyenoord coach Arne Slot was a trainer of AZ 365 days ago, Feyenoord players Guus Til and Alireza Jahanbakhsh once caused a furore in Alkmaar and AZ players Jordy Clasie and Bruno Martins Indi became international as Feyenoord. That is all just a side issue next Sunday, the main thing is of course the end result. Based on recent history, only one favorite can be designated: AZ. The Alkmaarders have won the last three Eredivisie matches with Feyenoord – including two in Rotterdam – and scored at least three goals in all these matches. Two of the three victories were led by Pascal Jansen, the other under Slot.

Feyenoord suffered the three aforementioned defeats against AZ under Jaap Stam and Dick Advocaat. Under Slot, the field game seems to have turned 180 degrees and confidence is high. The confidence with which AZ traveled to Rotterdam in recent years will be much lower this time due to the results in away games. AZ is already on four defeats in the league this season, already more than in 2019/20 (three times) and 2020/21 (twice). The swirling Kuip has already served Feyenoord more than once this season and will also give the players a push in the right direction against AZ. Feyenoord won eight of nine games in De Kuip this season in all competitions and drew once, and will be happy to add a ninth home win after a successful Europa League game.

No player has scored more goals this Eredivisie season than Guus Til. The attacking midfielder of Feyenoord scored seven times in the competition, just like Ajax player Haller. But Til is not the only accurate Feyenoord player; Bryan Linssen found the net six times. Dani de Wit is the visitors’ top scorer, with just as many goals as Linssen. Behind them are Jesper Karlsson and Vangelis Pavlidis, who both scored four times. Greek AZ striker Pavlidis has scored three times in his last three Eredivisie matches, after only having done so once in his first seven league games for the Alkmaarders. The quality of the shooting opportunities of De Wit, Til and Pavlidis is also good, as witnessed by their high Expected Goals-where the. Only the quality of Haller’s chances this Eredivisie season is higher (8.78 xG) than those of Dani de Wit (5.25 xG), Vangelis Pavlidis (5.23 xG) and Guus Til (5.23 xG) .
