The duel between Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow in the Europa League may be replayed. The Group E match ended in 1-1 on Thursday evening and UEFA may be investigating an alleged error of Sandro Schärer, the duty manager in Istanbul. He showed no red card in extra time when he apparently drew a second yellow card for Dmitri Zhivoglyadov of the visiting side.

Zhivoglyadov was shown a yellow card in the second minute of extra time for holding or hindering Kerem Aktürkoglu in midfield. A minute later there was a disturbance in Lokomotiv’s half. Schärer first drew a yellow card for Mbaye Diagne, then showed a print to Dmitri Barinov and finally he waved his yellow card to Zhivoglyadov, who reacted with surprise. The defender remained stunned, perhaps due to the lack of a red card from the Swiss leader, and then slowly backed away towards his goal area.

Media in Russia and Turkey paid extensive attention to the remarkable incident on Saturday. UEFA has not yet responded. If the European Football Association starts an investigation, Schärer’s referee report could be revised. Replaying the match in the Nef Stadyumu is a possibility, especially if Galatasaray appeals.

Galatasaray leads the dance in Group E with eight points from four matches. Lazio and Olympique Marseille follow with five and four points. Lokomotiv is on two points. The number one of the group stage continues in the eighth finals of the Europa League, while the number two first has to finish the sixteenth finals. The number three in the group continues in the sixteenth finals of the Conference League.
