Karim Benzema will also wear the shirt of Real Madrid in the coming years. The striker extended his contract for a year on Friday until mid-2023. His previous contract expired next summer. Benzema has never made a secret of his desire to play an extra year in Madrid and was completely in line with the club’s management in that regard. The contract extension was announced by Real on Friday through the official channels.

Benzema gets by marca called one of the best club signings in Real history. The Frenchman came over from Olympique Lyon in 2009 for approximately 35 million euros. For that amount the Royal brought in a striker who spent 12 years at the Santiago Bernabeu and has now broken into the top five club top scorers of all time, with a total of 274 goals in official matches. After his contract extension, a place in the top three is not excluded, reasons marca, with Benzema only 16 goals away from number four Santillana and 34 goals from number three Alfredo Di Stefano.

It is the fifth time that Benzema has extended his expiring contract with Real, having previously done so in 2009, 2014, 2017 and 2020. Internally, Benzema is seen as ‘one of the easiest players’ when it comes to contract negotiations. Benzema, for example, has no problem with the policy of having players over the age of thirty re-sign for only one year. It is always Real that knocks on him, after which he never reacts negatively to the proposal of the club management.

Benzema scored 25 goals in 36 official games last season. In LaLiga, he has scored 19 goals this season; only Lionel Messi scored more goals (23). In March, during a press conference prior to the return match against Atalanta (3-1 win) in the Champions League, Benzema said that “his door is open” if president Florentino Perez wants to continue with him. In the background, Olympique Lyon still dreamed of his return, but that is realistic at the earliest in 2023.
