Ajax and Olympique Lyon have agreed on a transfer from André Onana, reports L’Equipe Tuesday evening. According to the French sports newspaper, an agreement was reached last Friday on a transfer fee of ‘less than six million euros’. It is nevertheless the question whether Onana will switch this summer, because he has not yet put his signature. Optimism in Lyon about his arrival would gradually diminish.

Lyon director Vincent Ponsot has been working on the arrival of Onana for weeks, because his arrival is the priority of the new trainer Peter Bosz. Last week reported L’Equipe already that a personal agreement between Onana and Olympique Lyon had been concluded. In the meantime, however, Onana’s agent would cause a delay. The last financial folds have not been ironed out yet and Onana is even considering waiting until January before committing to a new club. The goalkeeper would be after a ‘significant signing bonus’.

The negotiations between Ajax and Olympique Lyon have not been easy in recent weeks. Marc Overmars, director of football affairs in Amsterdam, initially bet on a transfer fee of fourteen million euros for Onana’s contract in Amsterdam, which runs until mid-2022, while the French club’s opening bid, according to The Telegraph amounted to three million euros. The asking price then fell to eleven million euros, later to eight million euros and now Ajax seems to be satisfied with an amount ‘less than six million euros’, already reported. L’Equipe last week that several bonuses were included.

This summer is the last moment for Ajax when an acceptable amount can still be left over from Onana. The goalkeeper – who is still serving a doping suspension until November – has ignored the Amsterdammers’ offers to extend his contract. “All in all, it’s a dramatic file. From time to time we are in contact. We know that André is in Spain. You also continue,” Overmars said to Football International. “Of course it is also very important for him to make a transfer this summer. I think that as a top athlete you really can’t wait another eight months before you start playing again. I understand that he wants to leave again.”
