Jordy Clasie has extended his contract with AZ, the Alkmaarders announced via the official channels. The 29-year-old midfielder’s previous contract has expired, although his contract until the summer of 2021 did include an option for another season. However, both parties have now found an agreement to break open his contract and extend it for three years, leaving Clasie with AZ until mid-2024.

“I chose this step because I feel very comfortable here, both myself and my family. So I am happy that I can continue to play for this club for three more years. The term of this contract also expresses confidence in the club. So for me, all the dots were on the i, so I came to an agreement with AZ fairly quickly”, says Clasie. The midfielder has been playing at AZ since 2019, which took over from Southampton two years ago on a free transfer.

Clasie, who previously also wore the shirt of Feyenoord, Excelsior and Club Brugge, came to 43 official games in Alkmaar for the time being. In the past year, partly due to injuries, there were only eleven appearances, seven of which as a basic player. “I started more than a week ago. We made a conscious choice because I was out for six months last season with an injury. You want to start the season as fit as possible, and that’s why I cut off my holiday earlier. My goal is to be there from the start and play as much as possible.”

“We have seen in the past two years that Jordy is a player with a lot of quality,” says director of football affairs Max Huiberts. He confirmed earlier in the day that talks are underway with Atalanta about Teun Koopmeiners, a direct competitor for Clasie. “He has a lot of experience, at the same time a good click with the younger players and knows what is required at the top. Jordy has had some bad luck with injuries, but you can see from everything that he intends to start the preparation fit. We are very happy that Jordy will be here for three years.”
