Gareth Southgate of England has announced the selection for the European Championship. The national coach has had to scrap seven players compared to the pre-selection that was announced last week. Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Ben Godfrey, James Ward-Prowse, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Ollie Watkins are the unlucky ones.

It became clear on Tuesday morning that Greenwood would not be in the selection. Due to injuries, the European Championship is not feasible for the attacker; he wants to fully recover at the Manchester United training complex and therefore passes the tournament by. In addition, reported The Athletic earlier on Tuesday that Jesse Lingard, despite a strong half-season loan spell at West Ham United, would not survive the selection. That information turns out to be correct.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is assured of a place in the selection. The Liverpool defender was ignored by the national coach in the previous international period. In the end of the competition, he managed to put himself in the spotlight. Alexander-Arnold is one of four options for the right back position: Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James can also play in that position. There is now a lot of jokes on social media about the large number of right backs, although it is also conceivable that they are in other positions.

The English team has home advantage at the European Championship, as all three group matches are played at Wembley. The first opponent of the Southgate team on June 13 is Croatia. The spiciest game follows on June 18 against Scotland, present for the first time since 1998 at a major tournament. The group stage will close on June 22 against the Czech Republic.
