Salaries at Barcelona will be drastically reduced next year, LaLiga determined on Tuesday. The Catalan superpower may spend a maximum of 382.7 million euros on player salaries for the A-selection in the 2021/22 season, a decrease of no less than 288 million euros (41 percent). In the current situation, the Barcelona leadership works with a limit of 671 million euros.

The Spanish Football Association released the salary limits for all clubs in LaLiga on Tuesday. Just like Barcelona, title competitor Real Madrid also has to cut the salary house in mid-2021, although the reigning national champion of Spain does not come off as badly. In front of the Royal the limit for the next football season is set at 468.5 million euros, while Real currently has a maximum amount of 641 million euros.

When determining the salary limit, LaLiga looks at, among other things, the future income of clubs from the television rights. Due to the ongoing corona crisis, there are fears in Spain that revenues will drop sharply, especially since LaLiga will also play without an audience in the near future. The salary budget of all clubs at the highest level will be reduced by 610 million euros to 2.33 billion euros.

“The clubs are still spending more than intended”, Javier Tebas, chairman of LaLiga, sighs. Marca. “Clubs also cannot get rid of the ongoing contracts. The top clubs will be hit hardest. It will therefore be difficult to make purchases in January.” The current developments are bad news for Barcelona, which is still in the market for Memphis Depay. However, due to the current financial situation, it does not seem that the attacker will exchange Olympique Lyon for the Catalan superpower in the winter break.
