Olympique Lyon failed to win the Ligue 1 on Friday evening for the third time in a row. Coach Rudi Garcia’s team did not get any further than a disappointing goalless draw (0-0) against Nîmes. Memphis Depay, who was wearing the captain’s collar in the absence of suspended Houssem Aouar, was unable to make any impression. The 26-year-old striker, who is round with Barcelona, got no further than one shot into the hands of goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet throughout the match.

The first chance of the match was after eight minutes for Maxwel Cornet. The left Lyon midfielder received a cross in a dangerous position, but saw his shot turned by goalkeeper Reynet. Just after that Nîmes got the best chance of the first half. Renaud Ripart perfectly took on Lyon’s sixteen and then produced a shot on the bar. Not much happened in the remainder of the first half. Lyon had by far the most ball possession, but hardly any chances.

Five minutes after halftime Moussa Dembélé thought to open the score by tapping in a cross by Leo Dubois alert. The referee disallowed the goal, however, as the ball had crossed the back line just before Dubois’ cross. Moments later, Lyon claimed a penalty because of Ripart’s hands. The striker of Nîmes hit the ball with his arm, but neither the referee nor the VAR thought it was a penalty kick. Lyon then pushed Nîmes back and got another big chance in the ninetieth minute. Tino Kadewere’s header from a corner, however, was brilliantly turned by Reynet.
