Latest update:

May 4 is National Remembrance Day in the Netherlands, and there will be a two-minute silence from 8 p.m. Loved it there too Ziggo Sports Saturday evening. During the LaLiga match between Girona and FC Barcelona (4-2), the switch was made to Dam Square in Amsterdam just before 8 p.m., where Remembrance Day was taking place at the time.

The second half of Girona – Barcelona was about ten minutes in, when the following text appeared at the bottom of the screen Ziggo Sports: “Today we will be silent for two minutes at eight o'clock. We thus commemorate all war victims of the Second World War from the then Kingdom of the Netherlands, the victims who fell during the colonial war in Indonesia, and the victims who fell afterwards during war and peace operations in which the Netherlands was involved. We will interrupt our regular programming for this at 7:55 PM.”

Barcelona was leading 1-2 at that moment. Not much later we switched to the studio, where presenter John van Vliet once again announced that there would be a temporary switch to Dam Square.

About ten minutes later the broadcast started Ziggo Sports resumed again. “That was the Remembrance Day ceremony from Dam Square in Amsterdam. Here it continues, and that feels a bit strange, with live football, and we return to the match between Girona and Barcelona,” said Van Vliet.

It was then briefly shown what had happened in Girona during the interruption: two goals for the home team, which suddenly gave Girona the lead 3-2. Then a live connection was made again with the match and commentator Sierd de Vos.

On X there are several viewers who complain because they had to miss two goals because of the images of the National Remembrance Day that Ziggo Sports broadcast “Ziggo, what are you doing man, let me watch my football,” someone writes. “Thank you #Ziggo for the commemoration of the dead on all sports channels. Missed 2 goals,” said another.

Yet the channel can also count on compliments on the same social medium. For example, someone writes: “It's nice that they go out on Ziggo Sport for Remembrance Day.”

Girona ultimately won the match 4-2, which ensured Champions League football. Due to Barcelona's loss of points, Real Madrid also secured its 36th national title.
