A youth player would have been involved in the supporter riots around NEC-Vitesse, various sources report the Gelderlander. After the Gelderland derby (0-1), hundreds of NEC supporters sought a confrontation with the police. A player from the Nijmegen youth academy would have been involved in destroying a police van, it sounds like.

On images of Broadcasting Gelderland can be seen, among other things, how a supporter around the Goffert Stadium smashes the windows of a police van. ‘Various sources’ have to the Gelderlander confirmed that the fan in question is a youth player of NEC. According to reports, the person involved must first be identified by the police before the club can send the possible perpetrator away.

Wilco van Schaik, general manager of NEC, has been asked to comment on the incident, but he indicates that he does not want to comment on the matter yet. “I have a meeting with the security department shortly. Like every morning last week with regard to progress in the recognitions and arrests. We’re on top of that. If someone is accused, there will have to be evidence,” said Van Schaik.

During the confrontation with the police, rioting supporters had completely destroyed a police bus. Sticks, stones and fireworks were thrown at the police. The riot police came in to restore order. Several arrests had been made, although it is not known how many people have been arrested. A police spokesman confirmed that charges had been made. Images also circulated on social media of masked Vitesse fans, recognizable by yellow-black masks, who destroyed fences around Het Gofferstadion.
