Willem van Hanegem notes in his column in the Algemeen Dagblad that Frank de Boer has a goalkeeper problem to solve for the Dutch before the start of the European Championship. The Curve questions the decision to include Maarten Stekelenburg in the pre-selection for the international matches against Turkey, Latvia and Gibraltar. Van Hanegem would rather have seen a young goalkeeper in the pre-selection for the Dutch.
“Jasper Cillessen will play for Valencia again. A great keeper with experience. You can say the same about Tim Krul. He is the first goalkeeper at Norwich City, so you can have him very well. So we really don’t need to get confused. In the Eredivisie, tears sometimes spring to your eyes from the level of the keepers ”, Van Hanegem writes. He calls Marco Bizot (AZ) and Sergio Padt (FC Groningen), who are behind Cillessen and Krul, ‘real club keepers’.
“A mistake now and then, not spectacular”, Van Hanegem continues. “And apparently also behind the experienced Maarten Stekelenburg, who has been included in the pre-selection this time. I think it is good to bring a young keeper with you. Justin Bijlow is always a candidate, but he shouldn’t be involved in it at all. That boy wants so badly, but too often has physical problems. Writing him off, as people do now, is nonsense. He will be there, but this is not his season. ” Bijlow is struggling with injuries this season and had to miss the match between Feyenoord and VVV-Venlo (6-0) last Saturday.
At the same time, Van Hanegem calls Joël Drommel a ‘great talent’. The FC Twente goalkeeper has recently been linked to Ajax and PSV, among others. “Please don’t let him sign while that Yvon Mvogo is still there. That stubborn German trainer has brought the Swiss all by himself and he always leaves him alone. So Drommel ends up on the couch there. He must be first choice somewhere, otherwise it will go as before with Eloy Room at PSV and also a bit like now with Kjell Scherpen at Ajax. You get out of the picture and that is a shame. ”
