VfL Wolfsburg booked a narrow victory in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Sunday afternoon. On a visit to the Preussen Stadium, the team of trainer Mark van Bommel only settled after extra time with Preussen Münster, which plays its competition matches at the fourth level of Germany: 1-3. Josip Brekalo prevented Preussen Münster from taking a win in regular time with a goal in the ninetieth minute; Wout Weghorst made it 1-2 in extra time, after which Ridle Baku put the final score on the scoreboard.

Not unexpectedly, the visitors were the dominant party in the first act. Still knew Die Wölfe not to force a breakthrough. The greatest chance of the first half was for Weghorst, who got a free header in the seventeenth minute but placed the ball just wide of the left post. Just after the resumption, the Dutchman also had a great chance when he came face to face with goalkeeper Maximilian Schulze Niehues; the latter made himself big and prevented a hit from the striker with a feline reaction.

Fifteen minutes before the end, disaster seemed to strike for Wolfsburg. On behalf of Preussen Münster, Marcel Hoffmeier opened the score from a corner kick from the right. Hoffmeier towered over Weghorst and Xaver Schlager and nodded convincingly: 1-0. It took until the absolute final minute of regular time before Wolfsburg, quite rightly, put things in order. On a pass from Kevin Mbabu, Brekalo shot the crucial 1-1 against the ropes. The away team took some distance in extra time.

A corner from Maximilian Arnold was head extended by Sebastiaan Bornauw, who had just come in. The latter got the ball at Weghorst, who nodded in the 1-2 from close range. In the end, it was Baku who finally put an end to all uncertainty in the injury time of extra time: 1-3. It was the first official game as trainer of Wolfsburg for Van Bommel.
