Wout Weghorst is infected with the corona virus and has to be quarantined, his employer VfL Wolfsburg reports. The striker of the Bundesliga club will therefore miss the Champions League match against Red Bull Salzburg next Wednesday. It is a new setback for the striker who has lost his base place under trainer Mark van Bommel.

Weghorst had to deal with symptoms on Sunday and then tested positive for the corona virus. The rest of the Wolfsburg roster tested negative. Due to the contamination, Weghorst is not available for the time being. In any case, he will be missing from the Champions League on Wednesday and is a big question mark for next Saturday’s league game against SC Freiburg.

In December, Weghorst was still discredited when he questioned the current corona policy on Instagram. The the Dutch international eventually openly apologized for his statements. In April, he had to report to the Wolfsburg club management because of his statements about corona. “I am not a corona denier,” Weghorst said in the media a week later.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Weghorst wrote on Instagram on Monday morning. “Life is like riding a bike, you have to keep moving to stay in balance. I use this time to develop myself and will come back stronger.” Weghorst was on the bench on Saturday in the 2-0 lost game against Union Berlin. Twenty minutes before the end he was allowed to come in, but he could not prevent a defeat.
