Willem Janssen was surprised by an article that appeared on Friday in The Guardian† The FC Utrecht defender spoke to the newspaper about Erik ten Hag, with whom he worked in De Galgenwaard between 2015 and 2017. In England, people were interested in Janssen’s opinion, as Ten Hag will start working for Manchester United after the summer. The interview was eventually published as an opinion piece.

So it seemed as if Janssen had written the article himself, but that was not the case. In terms of content, the article was a tribute to Janssen, who called Ten Hag the best trainer with whom he ever worked. “I thought: I’ll take a moment,” Janssen says with a laugh about the opportunity to speak with the well-known English newspaper. “I didn’t write it myself, let’s be clear. Did it seem that way? I was also a bit surprised. I knew it was published in The Guardian, but I think it was just an interview.”

Janssen says with a wink that he has rendered Ten Hag a ‘good service’. “This is crazy, of course, but it’s fun,” he tells the NOS† “Whether I felt the obligation to praise? No, not at all. I just gave my opinion about how I worked with Erik. I think all the players who worked with him are praise. a piece is purely positive.” Janssen does not see a future as a journalist for himself, as he will start working as technical manager of VVV-Venlo from next season.
