Jordy Wehrmann was recently removed from the selection of FC Luzern, trainer Fabio Celestini explains on Thursday in a response to the Swiss newspaper Blick. The midfielder hired from Feyenoord was missing from the match selection for the game with FC Basel last weekend (3-4 defeat) and an injury or infection with the corona virus was thought for a moment. However, disciplinary punishment was the cause of Wehrmann’s absence.

According to Blick Wehrmann appeared one time late for Lucerne training last week, after which Celestini decided to hand out a punishment. There were even rumors in the Swiss media that the mercenary would have eaten a croissant in the catacombs of the Swissporarena, but according to the Lucerne trainer, that is completely wrong. “The only reason why Jordy was not in the match selection for the game with Basel is his performance in practice. In our view they were insufficient”, Celestini explains.

The penalty handed out by the coach from Lucerne turned out to be short-lived, as Wehrmann made his return to midfield in the cup match against Lugano (1-2 victory) on Tuesday. Celestini brought the Feyenoord-trained player in as a substitute in the 63rd minute. Wehrmann has been playing in Lucerne’s shirt since January and has had thirteen games to his name so far. In those duels, the midfielder did not score yet, although he did manage to prepare a goal once.

Feyenoord announced at the end of March that the option in the expiring contract of Wehrmann has been lifted, so that he will also be under contract in Rotterdam-Zuid next season. “We keep a close eye on Jordy’s development after his rental and are happy to see that things are working out well so soon,” said technical director Frank Arnesen in a response to the Feyenoord website. “The fact that he can now make meters at the highest level is good for him and good for Feyenoord. After the summer he can go for his chance with more baggage here with us.” Feyenoord has spoken with Lucerne about an option to buy in the rental deal, although it is unclear what exactly the conditions in this regard are.
