There is a lot of criticism on Georginio Wijnaldum after the meeting with Real Madrid (0-0) in the quarterfinals in the Champions League. The captain of the Reds was busy tying his shoelaces in the 89th minute, as Liverpool made frantic efforts to brush up on the defeat in the first game. Wijnaldum’s action provoked angry and indignant reactions from Liverpool supporters.
The images clearly show that Wijnaldum is kneeling in the vicinity of referee Björn Kuipers, trying to tie his shoelaces. To make matters worse, Liverpool lost the ball at that moment, as a wide pass from Thiago Alcántara in the direction of Trent Alexander-Arnold was intercepted by the alert defense of Real. “Wijnaldum who is going to tie his shoes in the middle of an attack, that cannot be true”, is just one of the many surprised reactions on social media. Another Twitter user hopes that the thirty-year-old midfielder will be sold to Barcelona very soon.

Wijnaldum seems to have lost popularity at Anfield anyway, as his contract has still not been renewed and the rumors about a departure to Barcelona are far from gone. Many Liverpool supporters would like to know where they stand with the the Dutch international. Wijnaldum has been playing in the shirt of the club that has been eliminated from the Champions League since 2016. Almost five years ago, Liverpool deposited approximately thirty million euros for the Newcastle United-based midfielder.
