There is a lot of dissatisfaction with Sarina Wiegman, despite the fact that the the Dutch Lionesses graced the debut at the Olympic Games with a 3-10 victory over Zambia. The national coach is particularly angry about the protocols surrounding the corona virus and the way in which the internationals are treated in the players’ hotel. The indignant Wiegman even uses the term ‘prison’.

“We live in a hotel in which we are put away at the back of the building, which I think is really not good”, Wiegman says after the monster victory over Zambia in conversation with The Telegraph. “We’re not allowed in the public areas, we go through the staff entrance, have to walk through the staff corridors, eat somewhere in the basement. And we can’t go outside. It’s a prison.” For the national coach of the the Dutch Lionesses, the measure is already full after just one group match.

“It can’t stay like this any longer. We just have to be able to go outside for a while! So I don’t talk about it anymore. It is really impossible for us to contract Covid.” People who visit the Olympic Games in Japan are allowed to move completely freely two weeks after arrival, but that does not apply to the athletes and football players. “We know that we have to be very careful. Of course we stick to that. We’re not going to go shopping or anything. But you can’t just lock people up for two weeks. That’s really not possible. It just isn’t possible,” Wiegman grumbles.

The Dutch camp has been working on finding a solution for some time now. “We are always looking for contact with the organization, telling them that they must change it. Because we are going to break open doors or something. The organization has to do something about it. There is a great garden at our hotel. There is no chicken there, but also We are not allowed in there,” concludes the deeply disappointed Wiegman, who is preparing with the the Dutch Lionesses for Saturday’s second group match with Brazil.
