Brian Brobbey is a serious option to start as the first striker of the Dutch team at the European Championships in Germany, national coach Ronald Koeman said on Sunday morning. ESPN in Good morning Eredivisie. The selector has many options, because Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna) and Memphis Depay (Atlético Madrid) are also in good form.

At the start of the talk show, Koeman was asked whether a fit Memphis is his first striker at the European Championships in Germany. The national coach answered 'no' and explains later in the broadcast that the 88-time international of the Dutch team is also an option as a left winger.

However, Hans Kraay junior is not satisfied with Koeman's answer and is curious who is currently his first striker for the Dutch national team. “I don't know, I'll see later,” Koeman responds. “You can't expect me to say that now. It seems to me that I should first discuss things with the players before I start shouting at the table that this is Wout Weghorst, Brian Brobbey or Memphis.”

Koeman says that Joshua Zirkzee is currently being closely monitored by the Dutch technical staff. The 22-year-old Dutchman has already scored 10 goals and 5 assists for Bologna this season. “He plays there in a free role in the striker,” Koeman indicates. “Zirkzee collapses a lot and is strong on the ball. He just can't always be found in the box, where a striker should be in my opinion. Zirkzee is much more of a number 9 who plays along.”

According to Koeman, Zirkzee and Brobbey cannot be compared. “I think Brobbey has been developing well in recent months and is becoming fitter as a player. Yesterday he had two very important moments,” he refers to the two chances in the match against PSV. “He didn't have the best approach for Ajax's first goal, but the follow-up (the assist to Berghuis, ed.) was more than good. He keeps a good overview.”

“In the second half, Brobbey had a little too much difficulty in his acceptance, so he did not create an open chance. But he is developing, is fast and strong, so it is a serious option to start with him. A serious option, isn't that nicely said?”

Memphis is also making itself heard at Atlético. Last Wednesday he was important for the Madrid team by scoring the winning goal just before the end. “I often have contact with Memphis, because he was of course very important during my first period as national coach of the Dutch national team (from February 2018 to August 2020, ed.),” Koeman explains.

“I think he recently played 95 minutes again against Rayo Vallecano, where he scored the winning 2-1 just before the end. That is the first time in about a year and a half. He is a player with extra qualities who was decisive and can again be decisive for us.”
