Feyenoord will face Maccabi Haifa in the group stage of the Conference League this afternoon. Tjaronn Chery, an old acquaintance of the Rotterdam team, plays for the Israeli team. Feyenoord had in the past been interested in the attacking midfielder. Despite serious contact between the parties involved, there was never any cooperation.

Chery made a strong impression in the FC Groningen shirt in the 2014/15 season. Various clubs showed interest, including Feyenoord. In the end, it was Queens Park Rangers that brought him to England for more than two million euros. “When I was sold from FC Groningen to Queens Park Rangers, I also had contact with Feyenoord. That did not take place then, but there has always been contact back and forth,” says Feyenoord’s opponent in The Telegraph.

In 2017, Chery left for China to play for Guizhou FC. Feyenoord did not lose sight of him then. “When I played football in China, Feyenoord wanted to hire me for a year, but that didn’t go through either, because the Chinese didn’t want to let me go. In retrospect it may have been a shame. I’ve had a great career. But it would have been nice to play at a top club in the Netherlands.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Chery will meet two former teammates with Jens Toornstra (ADO The Hague) and Bryan Linssen (FC Groningen). “It was nice meeting those guys. I’m going to tease them a bit,” Chery said with a wink. The match between Maccabi Haifa and Feyenoord starts on Tuesday afternoon at 4.30 pm.
