Valentijn Driessen has nothing good to say about the interview that Steven Berghuis gave after the Ajax – RKC Waalwijk match (4-1). Driessen believes that the Ajax right winger let his teammates down by taking responsibility for the poor performance away from himself. “Incomprehensible,” Driessen says in the podcast Kickoff by The Telegraph.

“Everyone looks at me and Bergwijn a lot,” Berghuis said on Sunday ESPN. “I think unfairly. If you have two of the best players in the Eredivisie, you should cherish them rather than the other way around. It would be strange if the problem lies with me and Bergwijn, I'll leave it at that.”

“I found this incomprehensible,” Driessen responded a day later. “It's a team sport, isn't it? Or is it nine players plus two princesses on the wings? What is this about? He's just completely absolving himself for the entire season.”

Berghuis said that as attackers he and Bergwijn are not responsible for Ajax's defensive play. “Those players at the back will indeed have to ensure that those two can make the difference, but if that doesn't work, then they will simply have to participate,” Driessen responds. Berghuis' interview will not improve team spirit. “To the rest of the team, this is simply a death blow.”

Mike Verweij was in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Sunday and tried to interpret Berghuis' words. “Berghuis tried to pass a ball through. That didn't work and the crowd immediately whistled…”

“Look, Berghuis made an enormous contribution to the first goal (with a front assist to Bergwijn, ed.) and scored the fourth goal himself. He also does a lot of good, but the audience is very critical of him. I think the irritation also came a little from there.”

Yet Verweij does not find Berghuis's interview useful. “I agree with Valentijn: you are all responsible for your performance, so he will also have to work hard when asked.”
