VfB Stuttgart booked an important victory in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening with a visit to VfL Wolfsburg. Thanks to hits from Konstantinos Mavropanos and Philipp Förster, trainer Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team secured the three points: 0-2. With the win, Stuttgart rises to fifteenth place with seventeen points from fifteen matches, while Wolfsburg is tenth with twenty points from fifteen games. Wout Weghorst failed to score for the third time in a row for the Wölfe, who have now lost five times in a row.

Wolfsburg and Stuttgart presented the visitors in the Volkswagen Arena with a lackluster opening phase. Both teams were unable to create cleared chances. The home team, where Wout Weghorst started in the base, had to deal with a setback after twenty minutes of play, when Aster Vranckx had to leave the field injured. The midfielder was replaced by coach Florian Kohfeldt by Josuha Guilavogui.

Another blow for the home team followed not much later, when Mavropanos Stuttgart took the lead. The right-back streaked a falling ball from the edge of the box in the top right corner: 0-1. The misery only got bigger for Wolfsburg after the break. First it saw another player in the form of Paulo Otavio injured, after which Förster doubled the margin for Stuttgart. With some luck, the attacker got the ball in front of his feet and then slid in control past goalkeeper Koen Casteels: 0-2.

Stuttgart missed the perfect opportunity to close the game in the final phase, when referee Sascha Stegemann put the ball on the spot after a handful from Maximilian Arnold. Omar Marmoush’s panenka landed exactly on the crossbar, after which the rebound was not spent on Wataru Endo.
