Bayern Munich has taken full advantage of RB Leipzig’s loss of points. The day after the scoreless draw of the number two against TSG Hoffenheim (0-0), Hansi Flick’s team won 2-3 at VfL Wolfsburg, where Wout Weghorst made his nineteenth goal in the competition. Bayern has, with five match days to go, a lead of seven points. At the same time, Schalke 04 went down hard at SC Freiburg (4-0), partly due to a penalty kick caused by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and sees direct relegation from the Bundesliga getting closer.

VfL Wolfsburg – Bayern Munich 2-3
Olivier Glasner’s team started well, but a few errors ensured that Bayern laid the foundation for the victory in the first 45 minutes. After preparatory work by Alphonso Davies, who easily shook off Ridle Baku, Jamal Musiala signed for the 0-1 after fifteen minutes of play. Less than ten minutes later the 0-2 fell: Leroy Sané was given way too much space, Koen Casteels did not look good at a ball from David Alaba, after which Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took advantage. Ten minutes before half-time, Wout Weghorst took care of the 1-2, preceded by Thomas Müller’s loss of the ball: after a good action by Xaver Schlager, the Dutchman fired the ball into the far corner behind Manuel Neuer. Two minutes later, however, Musiala headed in the 1-3 after a cross from Müller.

In the first ten minutes, the game went up and down, with opportunities for Müller and Musiala on the Bayern side. The teenager watched Maxence Lacroix take his bet from the goal mouth. The home team came back to 2-3 after 54 minutes of play: after a sharp cross from Paulo Otavio from the left towards the first post, Maximilian Philipp worked the ball in high. The remainder of the second half was very exciting because Wolfsburg continued to believe in at least a draw. Despite opportunities for Weghorst and Jérome Roussillon, it remained 2-3

Borussia Mönchengladbach – Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0
The team of Adi Hütter only suffered the second (!) League defeat of the calendar year on Saturday. Matthias Ginter made it 1-0 after only ten minutes of play with a striking header at the front post. Borussia Mönchengladbach escaped a quick equalizer when goalkeeper Tobias Sippel hit a header from Stefan Ilsanker on the crossbar. Withdrew in the second half die Fohlen the duel finally takes over. A half volley by Jonas Hoffman went under the body of Kevin Trapp, Ramy Bensebaini headed in a rebound after a header by Nico Elvedi on the crossbar after a corner and Hannes Wolf determined the final score in extra time. Thanks to the victory, Borussia Mönchengladbach still has a lot of chance at European football.

SC Freiburg – Schalke 04 4-0
With Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in the base, Schalke faced a backlog on a visit to Freiburg within seven minutes. A pass from Benjamin Stambouli could easily be intercepted by Baptiste Santamaria, after which the midfielder could steam up and put the ball wide on Lucas Höler. For the latter it was then a breeze to finish from close range: 1-0. Freiburg clearly had the upper hand in the initial phase and did not let the visitors smell a possible result for a moment. Halfway through the first half, the urge to attack led to a second goal, when a corner kick from the left ended up at the far post and Huntelaar hit the face of Roland Sallai with a striking movement. Referee Tobias Reichel showed no compassion and saw how Sallai then used the penalty kick himself: 2-0.

Schalke was nowhere to be seen, was unable to produce a single shot on goal in the first half and had to concede a third goal immediately after the break. After Suat Serdar lost the ball, Christian Günter decided to give it a try from the edge of the penalty area with a shot to the bottom right corner. Ralf Fährmann had no answer to the left wing defender’s efforts and was left without a chance for the third time. The same Günter took care of the final score fifteen minutes before time, when he signed for his second of the afternoon on a pass from Sallai: 4-0. Later in the evening, number penultimate 1. FC Köln can enlarge the gap with Schalke, if the team of new coach Friedhelm Funkel manage to book a result on a visit to Bayer Leverkusen.

FC Augsburg 0-0 Arminia Bielefeld
From the bench, Michel Vlap and Mike van der Hoorn had to see how the home team had the better of the game. Augsburg, with Jeffery Gouweleeuw in the base, met his favorite opponent with Bielefeld. André Hahn thought he could score the opening goal after eight minutes of play, but saw how his bet could be narrowly blocked from close range. On the other hand, Andreas Voglsammer presented the greatest danger on behalf of Bielefeld. The attacker was played in a promising position, but was inaccurate in the completion and saw his effort just over the bar. In the second half, Augsburg went even more emphatically in search of a breakthrough and the team in the person of Ruben Vargas was given the perfect opportunity to take the game, but the midfielder ran into goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

1. FC Union Berlin – VfB Stuttgart 2-1
The game started slowly in the German capital, but the first serious opportunity was immediately hit. Christopher Trimmel received the ball near the back line and delivered an excellent cross at the far post, where Grischa Prömel was perfectly positioned to nod in the 1-0 on behalf of Union Berlin, where the injured Sheraldo Becker was missing. The lead was further expanded just before half time. Once again there was a star role for Trimmel. With a sharp cross from the right, the captain operated Petar Musa, who slid into the 2-0 from close range. Four minutes after the break, Stuttgart did something back. Sasa Kalajdzic delivered a tailor-made pass to Philipp Förster, who coolly put the 2-1 final score on the scoreboard from within the sixteen-meter area.
