Marc Overmars has provided an update on the state of affairs within the selection of Ajax on Thursday evening prior to the Europa League match against AS Roma. The director of football affairs of the team from Amsterdam was in front of the camera RTL asked about Owen Wijndal and Joey Veerman. Overmars emphasizes that Ajax is ‘trying to get the best Dutch players’, but at the same time indicates that he hopes that Nicolás Tagliafico will stay with Ajax next summer.

“Owen Wijndal perhaps, Joey Veerman: how can we look at that?”, RTL reporter Marcel Maijer asks Overmars. “Well, I think we always look at what kind of talent is around in the Netherlands,” Overmars replies. “We try to get the best Dutch players. But these are questions that I can’t do much with. Because I don’t know what’s going on with our own team. Again: I hope that Nico (Tagliafico, ed.) Stays. ”

“But he will be 29 and would like to take another step, but I will start the conversation: sit down for a year. We are in the quarter finals of the Europa League with a very young team, due to injuries. That is also a danger, you miss the experienced guys in such a match ”, Overmars continues, while he points out the lack of, among others, Daley Blind, Maarten Stekelenburg and Sébastien Haller against AS Roma. The technical person with ultimate responsibility at Ajax does not yet dare to comment on any outgoing transfers that may be at the door.

“We live in a world where we have to see whether players are going to be bought away at all. We are a bit spoiled by the large amounts of the past years, but I do not see them being achieved just like that. On the one hand, that is an advantage, because players stay. But we also know that Ajax has to make one or two major transfers to keep things in order ”, says Overmars. Ajax will in any case say goodbye to Brian Brobbey next summer, who has put aside a contract offer and will move to RB Leipzig free of transfer.

“Then I need half an hour to look back completely,” Overmars responds when asked about his vision of the story about Brobbey’s departure. “I said that I am very disappointed because he is a striker. Ajax has not had that from their own youth for a long time. But he is also a fantastic player and a fantastic boy, who fits very well in our group. With Timber, Rensch, Gravenberch: that group moves nicely through the team. ”
