SC Cambuur booked the fourth league win in a row at NEC on Friday evening: a club record in the Eredivisie. In Nijmegen, the game between the two promoted clubs ended in 2-3. As a result, Cambuur has climbed to fourth place in the Eredivisie rankings, although that is no reason for Henk de Jong to celebrate.

“We just have to stay calm. Match to match. We are fourth, I don’t think that has ever happened. We still have ten points to get, then we will go into the polonaise,” the Cambuur trainer emphasized in conversation with ESPN. “We won. And we also had to win, because Ajax must not run out any further. We are catching up, we only have to catch up on goal difference,” he said with a smile.

Cambuur was still 2-1 behind in Nijmegen halfway through, but turned it around after the break. The northerners had nothing to complain about the rest position. “We can be 3-0 behind after fifteen minutes. We are lucky that it is 2-1 at halftime, then I could give them a go at halftime. We had to play much more fanatically. And then we turned it around on character.”

Cambuur is only listed below the traditional top three: Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. With 24 points from the first 14 matches, the Frisian club is the best performing PhD student since Vitesse in 1989/90.
