Memphis Depay has expressed his support for Georginio Wijnaldum. The unfortunate AS Roma midfielder suffered a tibia fracture last month and has to drop the World Cup with the Dutch national team. Depay says he is always in close contact with Wijnaldum and openly encourages him. During the previous international match, the attacker already spoke up for Wijnaldum, who had passed by then.
Less than two weeks after his official presentation to Roma – who will hire him from Paris Saint-Germain this season – Wijnaldum broke his right shin in training. It usually takes three to six months to recover. This allowed a line through the World Cup in Qatar, for which the midfielder was looking for playing minutes again. “I am always in contact with Gini. If something like this happens, it is very bad,” said Depay during the press moment at the Dutch. “Then you sympathize, because he is a brother.”
The midfielder himself came up with an update on his recovery on Tuesday. Wijnaldum wanted to thank everyone who supported him shortly after the news of his injury became known. Depay is confident that Wijnaldum will recover quickly. “I see that he is now in good shape with a positive mindset,” said Depay. “We all have ups and downs. I also had that with a serious knee injury. But he will definitely come out stronger. We all wish him every success with that.”
The injury is a hard blow for Wijnaldum. At his presentation in the Italian capital, the veteran expressed the hope of quickly convincing national coach Louis van Gaal. “It will be a difficult year, because as a player you normally really have to grow in the season. Now I have to start very strong right away. That will be difficult, because the World Cup is already in the winter.
