Vivianne Miedema swaps Arsenal for Manchester City, confirms the Citizens via the official channels. The 27-year-old striker comes over on a free transfer from the gunners and signs a three-year contract with the blue club from Manchester. Miedema played no less than seven seasons at Arsenal, but now faces a new challenge.

Manchester City finished second in the Women's Super League last season. The striker calls it 'the best footballing team in the competition' in an interview with the General Daily Newspaper. “The attacking style of play suits me. Everyone knows how the men's team plays and that is also the philosophy within the entire club: play attractively.”

“That's also the way I look at football and how I like to play. I've missed that a bit in recent years.” Miedema was also in the spotlight of other top European clubs and clubs from America, but has consciously chosen to stay in England, partly for personal reasons.

Her partner Beth Mead plays for Arsenal. “That we would no longer live together one day was on the cards,” the Dutch international explains. “We talked about this for a long time and in detail. I am 27 and have to fully commit to my sporting career. I can be back in London within two hours by train, but I will first fully adapt to my new club. All things considered, Manchester City is the ideal step for me now.”

Miedema struggled with a knee injury last season. That period was tough for her. “The last period has been really tough for me. I can feel in everything that I am slowly getting back to my old self. The fact that I am making a fresh start helps with that. Sometimes it is good for your brain and body to build something up again in a completely new place,” said the striker.

The all-time top scorer of the Oranje Leeuwinnen started her career at sc Heerenveen and then left for Bayern Munich in 2014. The past seven years she played for Arsenal, where she scored 126 goals and provided 51 assists in 173 matches. In London, Miedema won one national title and three League Cups. The Oranje international will face fellow countrymen Jill Roord and Kerstin Casparij at Manchester City. Roord is currently recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.
