The Ajax Women were able to avert a defeat at Arsenal on Tuesday evening. At Meadow Park, the London team was the obvious favorite, but thanks to a late goal by Romée Leuchter, the team of trainer Suzanne Bakker pulled a draw out of the fire: 2-2. The first Amsterdam goal was also provided by Leuchter. The return in the last qualifying round of the Women’s Champions League will take place on September 28 at De Toekomst.

At Arsenal, trainer Jonas Eidevall had made a base for Vivianne Miedema, who was posted as the deepest striker. Leuchter gave substance to the striker position for the team from Amsterdam. Furthermore, in contrast to the won Eredivisie match against Fortuna Sittard (4-0), Liza van der Most and Nadine Noordam could count on a basic place. Under the watchful eye of Sarina Wiegman, England national coach, and former international Daphne Koster, among others, Ajax took the lead in the eighteenth minute of play.

Noordam sent Chasity Grant into the depths on the right with a nice through ball, after which the latter gave a cross to Leuchter. That striker came to the first post and tapped in from close range: 0-1. Ajax could not enjoy the lead for long, because within five minutes Stina Blackstenius had already equalized from the rebound. After an hour of play, Ajax seemed to break when Kim Little scored the 2-1 from a penalty kick, but nothing turned out to be less true. In the 83rd minute, after a carom in front of the enemy goal, Leuchter made the 2-2 from close range.
