Vitesse provided itself with air in the Eredivisie on Saturday. The team from Arnhem won 2-0 against Go Ahead Eagles in the absence of trainer Phillip Cocu, who underwent appendectomy. Vitesse scored via a beautiful free kick from Maximilian Wittek and a ticker from Mohamed Sankoh. This means that Vitesse is three points clear of the relegation zone in fourteenth place. Go Ahead is twelfth with three points more.
At Vitesse, Matús Bero returned to the number 10 position, this time behind Sankoh. The striker was preferred to Bartosz Bialek, who remained on the bench. Go Ahead scored a good point against Ajax (0-0) a week ago and appeared in Arnhem with three new names at the kick-off. Left back José Fontan, controlling midfielder Enric Llansana and wing striker Rashaan Fernandes joined the squad.
Vitesse has struggled to score goals this season, but broke open the match against Go Ahead after 21 minutes. A Wittek free kick flew in beautifully over the wall: 1-0. There was hardly anything to do in the first half. Kacper Kozlowski tried from a distance on behalf of the home team, but saw the ball fly far over Jeffrey de Lange’s goal.
Immediately after the break, Sankoh blew a gigantic opportunity by shooting straight into the hands of De Lange in complete freedom. The attacker made up for it in the 64th minute by scoring. A half-high corner kick was extended with the heel by Melle Meulensteen and tapped in by Sankoh: 2-0. Go Ahead then came out of its shell more. Finn Stokkers broke through after a long ball from the back, but the substitute fired over. Six minutes before the end, a cross from Go Ahead striker Isac Lidberg hit the crossbar via a block from Marco van Ginkel. Vitesse got away well and played the game successfully.
