Theo Janssen has extended his contract with Vitesse for two years, until mid-2023. The Arnhemmer will be a talent coach within the club’s youth academy next season. This season Janssen is still trainer of the Under-18s. As a former player, the former midfielder has been associated with his club in various positions for more than twenty years.

As a talent coach, Janssen, 39 years old, will guide the top talents within the football academy in a broad sense of the word to take the step to the A-selection. It is a new and overarching role within the academy. Janssen regularly joins various teams and prepares players individually for the big work. In addition, the former footballer is more often used in activities of the club and will play a role as an ambassador at home games next season.

“I am happy with the confidence from the club. I think it would be great fun to contribute to the development of our top talents. After having been a scout and then a youth trainer for many years, this new role is a great step to develop myself more broadly and thus more comprehensively ”, Janssen explains.

Technical director Johannes Spors is also happy. “The football academy is very important for a club like Vitesse. If you look at this season, players like Daan Huisman, Enzo Cornelisse and Million Manhoef have broken through. We strive to allow as many top talents as possible to progress to the A selection. But quality is central to everything we do. Anyone knocking on the door of the first team should be good enough. Theo will play an important role in the individual development of our talents. ”

“With his tactical qualities, human approach and experience as a former professional, he can strike the right chord with our talents like no other.” Previously, Janssen was an assistant trainer at Jong Vitesse and Vitesse Onder-19, and trainer for Vitesse Onder-16. Immediately after his professional football career ended, he was a scout for several years. The Arnhemmer is also active as an analyst at Studio Voetbal and around matches of the Europa League at RTL 7.
