Vitesse did not manage to create a stunt on Thursday evening when visiting Tottenham Hotspur. The Arnhem team came back from a 3-0 deficit, but had to bow 3-2. With the Londoners Antonio Conte sat on the bench for the first time. He saw how Cristian Romero, Danilho Doekhi and Markus Schubert had to act early with a red card. Steven Bergwijn stayed with Tottenham, which takes over second place from Vitesse due to the victory, the entire game on the bench.

The more than 1,500 Vitesse supporters who traveled along saw a striking absentee at the kick-off in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Lois Openda had overslept for the match discussion and was placed on the bench by Letsch. Contrary to the first game in Arnhem, Conte did start with the big names this time and started with Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, Eric Dier and Heung-Min Son, among others. The latter already had the chance to score the opening goal after two minutes of play, but saw his bet removed from the line by Riechedly Bazoer after he had passed Schubert.

After fifteen minutes of play, the score was still opened by Son, who shot a rebound on the right side of the penalty area behind Schubert. Vitesse had hit the post just before via Maximilian Wittek. The Spurs drew the game more and more after a hesitant initial phase and were once again close to a goal via Son. This time, however, the South Korean hit the inside of the post. It turned out to be a postponement of execution for Vitesse, as Moura doubled the score halfway through the first half. The Brazilian had a free passage towards Schubert and did not fail: 2-0.

When Jacob Rasmussen slipped the ball unhappily behind his own goalkeeper before half an hour and put Tottenham at 3-0, the game seemed over. But Vitesse straightened up and brought the margin back to one before the break. The same Rasmussen headed from a corner from Wittek soon after the own goal and became the first player in the Conference League with a goal and an own goal in the same game. His connecting goal was followed five minutes later by the 3-2. After fumbling in the defense at Tottenham, Matús Bero placed the ball with the inside of the foot controlled in the right corner out of reach of Hugo Lloris.

In the second company, the entertainment value was significantly lower. Vitesse showed itself for the first time with the Openda, which has now come in. It was the Belgian attacker who forced Lloris to make a great save ten minutes after the break. The Arnhem team were then helped by Tottenham, where Romero had to leave early with a second yellow card after a foul on Openda. Letsch’s squad tightened their thumbs to that and were very close via Bazoer, but he saw his watched shot get caught by Lloris. The resistance was broken when Doekhi was also able to push in with a second yellow card. Vitesse ended the game with nine men, when Schubert made hands outside the sixteen in the absolute final phase.
